On the occasion of the 9th anniversary of Azhar, T-Series took to social media to pay tribute to the film and the man it portrayed — former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin. In a nostalgic post featuring a series of videos and pictures, the caption read: "A tribute to the man who changed Indian cricket forever. 9 years of Azhar and it still resonates." The biopic, released on 13 May 2016, remains a talking point for its bold portrayal of the cricketing icon’s life and career.
Directed by Anthony D’Souza (credited as Tony D’Souza), Azhar starred Emraan Hashmi in the lead role, supported by a cast that included Lara Dutta, Nargis Fakhri, Prachi Desai, and Kunal Roy Kapur. The film delved into Azharuddin’s journey from being a national sports hero to facing allegations of match-fixing, balancing both admiration and controversy.
Produced by Shobha Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor for Sony Pictures Networks, the film attempted to offer a dramatized insight into one of Indian cricket’s most turbulent chapters. While the premise generated interest, the film faced criticism for taking creative liberties, with many pointing out its fictionalized interpretation of real-life events. Despite its ambitious scope, Azhar had a lukewarm run at the box office, earning ₹508 million gross on a budget of ₹380 million.
Though it didn’t set commercial records, Azhar continues to spark conversations about the complex legacy of its subject. As T-Series marks nine years since its release, the film stands as a reminder of the ongoing fascination with stories that blur the lines between sports, fame, and controversy.
