Actor Shahid Kapoor recently took to his social media to commemorate the 9th anniversary of the acclaimed film Udta Punjab. Sharing a striking poster from the movie, Shahid revisited his memorable role as Tejinder “Tommy” Singh aka Gabru, a troubled rockstar grappling with addiction.
In his heartfelt caption, Shahid wrote, “9 yrs. Another special character. Another one of the flawed protagonists that I always loved to play. They seem to be in fashion now. Thank you @abhishekchaubey, @anuragkashyap10, @motwayne, Vikas Bahl and the entire team for making this journey so special. And of course. Drug’s di maa di.” His words reflected the deep connection he felt toward the character and the film’s impactful narrative.
Udta Punjab is a hard-hitting crime drama directed and written by Abhishek Chaubey, with co-writing credits to Sudip Sharma. Produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, Sameer Nair, and Aman Gill under Balaji Motion Pictures in association with Anurag Kashyap, Vikas Bahl, and Vikramaditya Motwane’s Phantom Films, the movie sparked important conversations about the rampant drug abuse in Punjab.
Loosely inspired by real events, Udta Punjab explores the dark underbelly of drug addiction among Punjab’s youth and the political and social conspiracies that enable it. The film’s ensemble cast includes Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Diljit Dosanjh, all delivering powerful performances that brought authenticity and urgency to the story.
As the film marked nearly a decade since its release, Shahid’s tribute serves as a reminder of Udta Punjab’s lasting impact on Indian cinema and its unflinching portrayal of a pressing social issue.
