Veteran actor Anupam Kher recently took to Instagram to share his excitement about reuniting with filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, calling him one of the “original cool” directors of Indian cinema.
The actor shared a photo of the two together, captioned: “COOL DUDE: I was really very happy to meet the maverick director Ram Gopal Verma recently! Even though as an actor I have just done a small guest appearance in one of his films, I have always admired his brilliance. He is one of the original ‘Cool’ directors. Hope he soon comes up with something extraordinary — with me also in it! Wishing you great luck, my friend!”
The post, shared on Kher’s Instagram, instantly struck a chord with fans of both artists, evoking nostalgia for some of Varma’s most iconic films.
Though Kher only had a guest appearance in Ram Gopal Varma’s 2005 political crime drama Sarkar, the admiration between the two seems strong. Varma, known for redefining Indian gangster and thriller cinema with films like Satya, Company, Rangeela, and Sarkar, has built a reputation for going against the grain — both in storytelling and personality.
Anupam Kher, a powerhouse of versatility with over 500 films to his name, praised Varma’s creative vision and fearless approach to filmmaking.
The photo triggered fans to speculate whether a new collaboration is in the works — and Kher’s hint ("hope he comes up with something extraordinary with me in it!") only fuels the excitement.
Ram Gopal Varma rose to prominence in the ’90s with Shiva and Rangeela, and cemented his place with cult classics like Satya, Company, and Sarkar. Known for gritty realism, sharp dialogues, and unconventional narrative structures, Varma is widely regarded as a filmmaker who redefined the gangster genre in India — and who never minces his words, on or off screen.
Whether or not a new collaboration is on the horizon, the reunion of these two cinematic veterans certainly has fans talking.
