Veteran star Jackie Shroff took a walk down memory lane as he celebrated 19 years of Eklavya: The Royal Guard. Marking the anniversary on social media, the actor shared a 14-second montage and captioned it, “#19YearsOfEklavyaTheRoyalGuard,” tagging the film’s team and co-stars, instantly sparking nostalgia among fans of the 2007 royal drama.
Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Eklavya: The Royal Guard hit theatres on 16 February 2007 and marked Chopra’s return to direction after a seven-year hiatus. The film blended Shakespearean tragedy with themes of loyalty, betrayal, and buried royal secrets, set against the grandeur of Indian aristocracy. Jackie Shroff played the antagonistic stepbrother Dunnu, adding layers of intrigue to the intense family conflict at the heart of the story.
The anniversary video shared by Shroff features dramatic glimpses of the film’s powerful ensemble cast, including Amitabh Bachchan as the stoic royal guard, alongside Sanjay Dutt and Vidya Balan. The montage closes with the film’s striking poster, rekindling admiration for its rich cinematography and emotionally charged performances.
Boasting a stellar lineup that also included Saif Ali Khan, Sharmila Tagore, Raima Sen, Jimmy Sheirgill, and Boman Irani, the film was lauded for its performances and visual storytelling. Though it received mixed box-office results, critics praised its ambitious narrative style and operatic tone.
Notably, Eklavya: The Royal Guard was selected as India’s official entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, a testament to its cinematic ambition, even though it did not secure a nomination. Over the years, it has earned a cult following for its dramatic intensity and layered storytelling.
Nineteen years later, Jackie Shroff’s tribute serves as a reminder of a film that dared to marry royal spectacle with emotional gravitas. For fans of richly mounted dramas and powerhouse performances, Eklavya remains a memorable chapter in Bollywood’s cinematic journey.
