Guneet Monga Kapoor is known for backing stories that carry emotional weight, but with Udta Teer, the producer and Sikhya Entertainment head was drawn to something slightly different — the sheer joy of a wholesome family entertainer. In an exclusive interaction, when asked what attracted her to a film that is not necessarily built around the kind of emotionally heavy stories she has often championed, Guneet said the desire to reinvent herself as a storyteller and producer was a major factor. “I think that’s exactly what excited me, because there’s always a desire to do something new. You know, I actually meet a lot of people who say, ‘This film is like The Lunchbox’ or ‘This film is like Hindi Medium,’ but I don't want to do that right now,” she said.
For Guneet, Udta Teer represented an opportunity to step outside familiar territory rather than repeat a formula that has worked before. “It’s about reinventing oneself—as a storyteller, as a producer. Of course, we read a lot of scripts and hear many pitches, but this one really stood out because it has everything,” she explained. And according to the producer, “everything” is quite literal in this case. The film brings together confusion, love, mystery, laughter, emotion and patriotism, creating a combination that she believes gives it the feel of a classic family entertainer.
Guneet was also careful not to put Udta Teer into a single genre box. While the film revolves around espionage and an accidental spy, she explained that its humour is not dependent on broad slapstick. “If you break it down, there’s every kind of comedy too. It’s not a sports film, and you can’t really categorize it that way. It’s not slapstick either; it’s genuine situational comedy layered with a lot of emotion,” she said. That combination appears to be one of the major reasons the film appealed to her, especially at a time when audiences are increasingly looking for stories that can entertain the entire family.
Guneet also credited writer-director Aakash Kaushik for creating the world of Udta Teer, while reserving plenty of praise for the film’s extensive ensemble cast. “I have to give credit to Akash’s writing—and, of course, the debutant director—but I also really want to talk about the actors,” she said. The producer then listed a cast that includes Mukul Dev, Rahul Bose, Suhail Nayyar, Ram Kapoor, Rupinder Walia, Sandeep Anand and Gulshan Grover, among others, suggesting that the supporting performances are an important part of the film’s overall appeal.
And then there are the two leads — Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan — who headline the film in a fresh pairing. Guneet’s enthusiasm for the ensemble was unmistakable as she continued, “Oh my God, what a joy it was to work with him and Smita-ji. And, of course, Ayushmann and Sara.” Her comments suggest that the film’s appeal isn't resting solely on its spy-action premise, but on the chemistry and performances of a large group of actors coming together to create an entertaining family experience.
Ultimately, Guneet believes Udta Teer is the kind of film audiences can simply sit down and enjoy together. “But it's wholesome—when you sit down for this, you're settling in for a truly wholesome film. You know, it's definitely a family movie. So, that’s what really excited me about it,” she said. Written and directed by Aakash Kaushik, Udta Teer follows an accidental spy whose unexpected entry into a high-stakes espionage game turns everything upside down, combining action, secrets, humour and emotion. Backed by Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, the film is scheduled to arrive in theatres on October 8, 2026.
