Veteran filmmaker Suneel Darshan, known for his work in the golden era of Hindi cinema, has opened up about the shifting dynamics of the film industry, addressing why Bollywood seems to be struggling in recent years. With decades of experience behind him, Darshan points to a fundamental shift in power and vision—from directors to stars—as a major reason for the creative stagnation.

Speaking candidly, Suneel Darshan reflects, “Earlier, directors used to make films. Now, stars make them. Over the last 15-20 years, we’ve handed over complete control of filmmaking to the stars.”

He explains that in the past, a director would be the creative visionary guiding a film from script to screen. Today, however, many films are driven by the whims and commercial strategies of lead actors. “What has happened is that the star became the producer, and the director became someone who was commissioned by them,” he adds.

Darshan also blames corporatisation for eroding the cultural and emotional fabric of Hindi cinema. He observes that many studio heads and producers, often trained abroad in places like the London Film School or Los Angeles, come into the Indian film industry with little understanding of Indian values, emotional patterns, and storytelling culture.“Despite lacking a deeper understanding of our cultural and behavioural nuances, these corporate figures are now controlling the kind of films being made,” he says.

He raises a crucial point: cinema isn't just entertainment—it’s a medium that subtly shapes public consciousness. “Cinema manages your mind. It controls your thought process. I don’t think that’s a very safe space to be in when the wrong people are in control.”

Darshan doesn’t just critique—he offers a path forward. He urges the industry to unite, set aside rivalries, and return to collaborative, culture-rooted storytelling.

“Everyone kept supporting the wrong direction. We’ve been hearing about enmity and disturbance in the industry for the last 5-6 years. It’s time to walk together again. If we support each other, good times can return,” he appeals.

After years of observing the industry from the sidelines, Suneel Darshan is making a comeback with "Andaaz 2", the much-anticipated sequel to his 2003 romantic hit Andaaz. This upcoming Hindi-language romantic drama marks the debut of fresh faces—Aayush Kumar, Aakaisha, and Natasha Fernandez—and promises a return to heartfelt storytelling.
