Bollywood is gearing up for a massive genre leap as filmmaker Vipul Amrutlal Shah teams up once again with superstar Akshay Kumar for an ambitious alien-predator style sci-fi project that promises to push Indian cinema into uncharted territory. The film, currently titled Samuk, is being described as a large-scale alien survival spectacle directed by Kanishk Varma and backed by international technical talent.
The collaboration marks another chapter in the long-standing creative partnership between the two, which has previously delivered genre-defining films. Speaking about their journey, Vipul Amrutlal Shah said, “I will just briefly mention one thing: returning after six films—which we did together—one of the things that Akshay and I have always strived for is never to repeat our genres. We consistently chose genres that were distinct from our previous film—whether it was Aankhen, Waqt, Namastey London, Singh Is Kinng, Action Replayy, or Holiday. And now, for the seventh time, we are working together again, bringing a brand-new genre to Indian cinema. We haven't really had a great 'Predator' or 'Alien' style film yet. This film will be directed by Kanishk Varma; it features some of the best Hollywood technicians, and it is a massive action film that we are mounting.”
He further added a grounded note amid the excitement: “So, we are extremely excited about it, though at this particular moment, I am unable to look beyond June 12th. So, June 12th is where my eyes are firmly set” — referring to his immediate focus on the upcoming release of Governor, directed by Chinmay D. Mandlekar and starring Manoj Bajpayee and Adah Sharma.
While Governor is inspired by the real-life backdrop of the 1990 Indian economic crisis and is set for a theatrical release on 12 June 2026, Samuk represents a completely different cinematic universe—one that blends science fiction, survival drama, and large-scale visual storytelling. With its alien invasion theme and international collaboration, the project signals a bold attempt to elevate Indian sci-fi on a global scale.
As audiences wait for both films, the combination of grounded financial thriller storytelling in Governor and high-concept sci-fi ambition in Samuk shows Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s continued commitment to genre diversity—this time taking Indian cinema straight into outer space.
