As the release date of Retro — a Tamil romantic action film directed by Karthik Subbaraj — nears, anticipation is reaching fever pitch. The film, slated to hit screens on May 1, 2025, stars Suriya and Pooja Hegde in lead roles and is jointly produced by Stone Bench Creations and 2D Entertainment.
At a special celebration held in Mumbai on Tuesday, Suriya opened up about what Retro means to him, both personally and artistically. “Retro is about going back in time... to all the lovely memories we want to hold onto and cherish in life,” Suriya shared. “For me, it takes me back to my college days — days that will always remain evergreen. So many friendships, so many different paths taken. We all started from zero. Those were times of fewer responsibilities, yet filled with pure joy. Maybe I would love to go back to those college days... I learned so much after school. That gave me energy. Life truly began from there. The memories from those days are still strong and fresh.”
Suriya also highlighted one of the film’s most unique and emotionally charged sequences. “We have some amazing musical numbers in the film. Each sequence is different. One particular scene is a 15-minute single-shot take — no cuts. In that, we dance, we fight, we argue. So much happens in those 15 minutes. Every member of the cast had to be able to dance, fight, and deliver dialogues — all while the camera keeps rolling. We move from the ground floor, upstairs, to the balcony, to the basement — it’s dynamic and deeply emotional. Everyone gave their absolute best.”
With Retro, Karthik Subbaraj seems to be blending nostalgia, emotion, and technical brilliance into a cinematic experience that promises to be memorable. Fans are eagerly waiting to see how the film pays homage to the past while crafting something entirely new.
