Netflix has dropped a new teaser and officially expanded the cast of its upcoming Japanese epic Last Samurai Standing, which will debut worldwide on November 13. The six-episode series, described as “a tribute to the indomitable spirit of warriors who lived through turbulent eras,” has also earned an invite to the prestigious On Screen section of the 30th Busan International Film Festival, cementing its status as one of the streamer’s high-profile Asian productions this year.
Producer and lead star Okada Junichi, who doubles as the action planner, unveiled five new additions to the ensemble cast. Joining the deadly battle royale drama are Hamada Gaku as superintendent general Kawaji Toshiyoshi, Okazaki Taiiku as Keage Jinroku—succesor of the Kyohachi-ryu sword school—Iura Arata as Home Minister Okubo Toshimichi, Tanaka Tetsushi as bureau of communications chief Maejima Hisoka, and Nakajima Ayumu as Okubo’s secretary Nagase Shinpei.
These names broaden an already powerhouse lineup that includes Fujisaka Yumia, Kiyohara Kaya, Higashide Masahiro, Sometani Shota, Saotome Taichi, Endo Yuya, Fuchikami Yasushi, Jo Kairi, Yamada Takayuki, Ichinose Wataru, Yoshioka Riho, Ninomiya Kazunari, Tamaki Hiroshi, and Ito Hideaki. Together they promise star wattage and intensity to match the series’ sweeping battle sequences.
At the helm is director Fujii Michihito, working in tandem with Okada to deliver striking visuals, most notably the ambitious large-scale Tenryuji Temple melee sequence—filmed over several days with more than 1,000 cast and crew members involved. The project adapts Imamura Shogo’s acclaimed “Ikusagami” novels (Kodansha Bunko) into a lavish historical narrative of loyalty, rivalry, and survival.
Behind the camera, the creative team is equally strong: screenplay credits go to Fujii, Yamaguchi Kento, and Yashiro Risa; Ohmama Takashi provides the score; Imamura Keisuke and Yamada Hiroki oversee cinematography; Miyamori Yui handles production design; Miyamoto Masae leads costume design; and VFX supervision falls to Yokoishi Jun. With executive producer Takahashi Shinichi and producer Oshida Kosuke steering production for Office Shirous, Last Samurai Standing is poised to deliver a visually stunning, emotionally charged epic when it strikes Netflix screens this fall.
