Amruta Fadnavis has sparked massive discussion online after announcing that she will not attend the 2026 Cannes Film Festival despite receiving an invitation to walk the prestigious red carpet. In a heartfelt video shared on X, the playback singer and wife of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed that she decided to forgo her Cannes appearance in support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for austerity measures and minimizing international travel.

Sharing the emotional announcement, Amruta wrote, “My first step towards the austerity measures envisioned by Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi ji: putting nation first.” She explained that she had been invited to represent Maharashtra, its rich cultural traditions, and India’s handloom heritage at the globally celebrated film festival. A specially crafted Yeola Paithani saree, made over several months by skilled artisans, had also been prepared for the occasion.

In the nearly two-and-a-half-minute video, Amruta detailed the immense effort that went into creating the traditional Paithani ensemble. She thanked Yeola artisans, designer Nachiket Barve, festival director Thierry Frémaux, and several collaborators who contributed to the project. Calling the decision “not easy,” she acknowledged the emotional and artistic investment behind the journey but emphasized that national interest should always take priority over personal opportunities.

The custom-made Paithani saree was reportedly designed as a tribute to Maharashtra’s cultural identity and traditional weaving craftsmanship. Amruta highlighted how the attire was intended to showcase Indian artistry on a global platform like Cannes. However, she said that respecting the Prime Minister’s vision of austerity and responsible public conduct became more important than attending the international event.

Her post quickly went viral and triggered polarized reactions across social media platforms. While many users praised her decision as patriotic and respectful toward the government’s call for restraint, others reacted with skepticism and sarcasm, questioning whether such symbolic gestures truly reflect practical austerity. The debate soon evolved into a larger online conversation about political messaging, celebrity visibility, and public image in 2026.

Despite the mixed reactions, Amruta’s announcement undeniably generated major attention around Indian handloom traditions, especially the iconic Yeola Paithani weave. Many fashion enthusiasts and supporters appreciated that the conversation still brought visibility to Indian artisans and heritage craftsmanship even without the Cannes appearance taking place.

Amruta concluded her message by expressing gratitude to everyone involved in preparing for the international event. “The red carpet can wait; the nation always comes first,” she stated, signing off with “Jai Hind! Jai Maharashtra!” Her statement has now become one of the most discussed celebrity-political moments linked to Cannes 2026.
