Backed by Aamir Khan, Ek Din brings together Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi in a Hindi adaptation of the Thai romantic drama One Day. Directed by Sunil Pandey, the film is crafted as a soft, emotional romance that explores longing, fantasy, and the fragile nature of one-sided love. With Sai Pallavi making her Bollywood debut and Kunal Kapoor in a supporting role, the film revolves around a love story that briefly comes alive for just one day.
The story follows Dinesh (Junaid Khan), a quiet and introverted IT professional in Noida who feels invisible in his own world. He silently loves his colleague Meera (Sai Pallavi), a cheerful and warm-hearted woman who remains unaware of his emotions. Meera, meanwhile, is involved with her senior Nakul (Kunal Kapoor), who claims to be separated from his wife and promises her a future together.
Things shift when the office trip takes them to Japan, Meera’s dream destination. Dinesh, who never expresses his feelings, silently watches her life move forward with someone else. In Japan, after a visit to a fortune bell, he wishes for just one day with Meera. Soon after, an unexpected accident leads to Meera suffering Transient Global Amnesia (TGA), causing her to forget recent memories and believe Dinesh is her boyfriend.
What follows is the emotional core of the film—one day where Meera and Dinesh live a completely different reality. They explore Japan together through snow-covered streets, festive locations, and quiet moments that feel suspended outside time. Dinesh, torn between truth and illusion, chooses to live in this brief dream he once only imagined.
Visually, the film stands out with its stunning depiction of Japan. The snow-filled landscapes, soft lighting, and serene streets give the story a dreamlike, almost postcard-quality charm. The setting often carries more emotional depth than the narrative itself, enhancing the film’s gentle romantic tone.
Sai Pallavi delivers a natural and heartfelt performance, bringing warmth and authenticity to Meera. Junaid Khan plays Dinesh with controlled restraint, which suits the character but sometimes limits emotional intensity. Kunal Kapoor’s role as Nakul feels underwritten and doesn’t fully explore the conflict it promises, while the supporting cast remains largely underutilised.
In the end, Ek Din is a visually pleasing but emotionally uneven romance. Its central idea is beautiful and its moments are soft and engaging, but the storytelling lacks consistency and depth. It remains a light, one-time watch for those who enjoy simple love stories set against scenic backdrops, but it falls short of becoming a truly memorable romantic experience.
