Apple TV+ has released the official trailer for Smoke, a gripping new limited series inspired by the Firebug podcast, which delved into the chilling real-life story of a serial arsonist in Southern California. Slated to premiere on June 27, 2025, the series stars Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett as unlikely partners navigating a trail of destruction left by two cunning and elusive fire-setters. As the flames rise, so do the stakes in this intense psychological thriller.
Egerton plays Dave Gudsen, a haunted arson investigator with his own past scars, while Smollett stars as Detective Michell Calderon, a dogged LAPD officer determined to uncover the truth—even if it means unraveling parts of herself in the process. As they chase the twisted logic behind a string of coordinated blazes, their paths converge, revealing a dark web of obsession, manipulation, and unresolved trauma.
The ensemble cast also features John Leguizamo, Rafe Spall, Greg Kinnear, Ntare Mwine, Hannah Emily Anderson, and Anna Chlumsky, adding depth and gravitas to the searing narrative. Created and executive produced by acclaimed novelist Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Shutter Island), Smoke is co-written by Lehane, Adriane McCray, and Molly Anne Miller, with direction from Jim McKay, Joe Chappelle, and Kari Skogland—known for their work on top-tier series like The Wire and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Set in the eerie, pine-covered landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, Smoke is as much a character study as it is a mystery, exploring the destructive lure of fire and the fragile line between justice and vengeance. With Apple TV+ positioning the series as a prestige summer thriller, Smoke could be one of 2025’s most atmospheric and unsettling must-watches.
