FX has unveiled the official trailer for The Shards, an upcoming psychological drama series based on the bestselling novel by acclaimed author Bret Easton Ellis. Executive produced by Ryan Murphy, the series promises a dark journey into obsession, identity, fear, and the hidden dangers beneath the glamorous surface of 1980s Los Angeles. The Shards will premiere with two episodes on Wednesday, August 5, at 9 PM ET on Hulu and FX.

Set against the vibrant yet dangerous backdrop of 1980s Los Angeles, The Shards follows a group of privileged high school seniors studying at an elite private school as they navigate the complicated world of adolescence. The series explores themes of identity, sexuality, jealousy, obsession, and the unsettling secrets that exist behind a picture-perfect lifestyle. While the students appear to have everything, a growing threat begins to disrupt their carefully controlled world.

The story centers on aspiring writer Bret, played by Igby Rigney, whose life changes after the arrival of a mysterious and charismatic new student named Robert Mallory, portrayed by Homer Gere. Robert transfers to the school just before Bret's final year, and his arrival coincides with growing fear across the city as a serial killer known as The Trawler begins targeting teenagers in Los Angeles.

As Bret becomes increasingly fascinated and suspicious of Robert, he starts questioning whether his new classmate is connected to the terrifying events happening around them. However, Bret's concerns are not easily accepted by those closest to him. In the trailer, his friend Susan Reynolds, played by Kaia Gerber, challenges his perspective, telling him, "You always embellish everything." The series raises a chilling question — is Bret uncovering a real danger, or is his imagination creating a darker reality?

Bret's inner circle includes Susan Reynolds, Debbie Schaffer played by Hayes Warner, and Thom Wright portrayed by Graham Campbell. The ensemble cast also features Wes Bentley, Evan Rachel Wood, and Jordan Roth, adding further depth to the show's mysterious and emotionally intense narrative. The series is produced by 20th Television and brings together a talented creative team led by Ryan Murphy alongside Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Bret Easton Ellis, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson, Nissa Diederich, Tanase Popa, Nick Hall, Michael Uppendahl, Max Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, and Brian Young.

Based on Bret Easton Ellis' 2023 horror novel, The Shards explores the blurred lines between reality and fiction. The story follows Bret's growing obsession with Robert and his fixation on The Trawler, a killer who appears to move closer while leaving behind disturbing threats and violent acts. As the danger intensifies, Bret must figure out whether he can trust the people around him — or even his own mind.

With Ryan Murphy's signature storytelling style and Bret Easton Ellis' unsettling exploration of obsession and fear, The Shards looks set to deliver a gripping psychological thriller filled with mystery, tension, and dark secrets. The FX series arrives on Hulu and FX on August 5, 2026, bringing audiences into a world where teenage ambition, dangerous fascination, and hidden horrors collide.
