Netflix has unveiled a behind-the-scenes making-of promo for East of Eden, offering viewers a closer look at how creator Zoe Kazan has reimagined John Steinbeck’s celebrated literary classic for a new generation. Titled “How Zoe Kazan Reimagined a Steinbeck Classic,” the featurette gives Kazan a chance to explain her creative vision for the seven-episode series. With Florence Pugh stepping into the role of the unforgettable Cathy Ames, the new adaptation promises to explore the darker corners of Steinbeck’s story while bringing a fresh perspective to its themes of family, identity, love and good versus evil.

At the centre of the series is Cathy Ames, a complex and deeply unsettling character whose life becomes intertwined with generations of the Trask family. Pugh takes on the role in a performance that sits at the heart of the new adaptation, with the story also following Adam Trask, played by Christopher Abbott, and Charles Trask, played by Mike Faist. As their lives collide, the series explores the ways family history can shape the present and how the choices made by one generation can continue to affect those that follow.

Kazan’s version is based on Steinbeck’s iconic 1952 novel, which has already been brought to the screen in the past, most famously in the James Dean-led 1955 film adaptation. But rather than simply retelling the familiar story, the Netflix series expands the material across seven episodes, giving the characters considerably more room to breathe. The darker side of the California dream forms an important part of the narrative, while Cathy’s mysterious motivations and her relationship with the Trask family drive much of the drama.

The making-of promo also puts the spotlight on the central question of morality that runs through the story. Cathy’s outlook is particularly striking when she asks why she would want to disappear and responds, “Because the world is so full of evil.” That idea sits at the heart of Kazan’s interpretation, with the battle between good and evil becoming more complicated than a simple choice between two opposing sides. Instead, the series appears interested in examining what pushes people toward darkness and whether the circumstances surrounding someone can shape who they ultimately become.

The impressive ensemble cast includes Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Ciarán Hinds, Martha Plimpton, Joseph Zada and Joe Anders, joining Pugh, Abbott and Faist in the expansive family drama. Zoe Kazan, known for writing projects including Ruby Sparks and Wildlife, serves as the creator and co-showrunner alongside Jeb Stuart. The episodes are directed by Garth Davis and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, bringing together a team tasked with translating Steinbeck’s sweeping literary world into a contemporary television experience.

East of Eden is set to premiere on Netflix on October 1, 2026, giving audiences a new way to experience one of American literature’s most enduring family sagas. With Florence Pugh taking on the challenging role of Cathy Ames and Zoe Kazan offering a fresh interpretation of Steinbeck’s themes, the series looks ready to put its own stamp on a story that has fascinated audiences for decades. For fans of period dramas, literary adaptations and morally complicated characters, East of Eden could be a particularly intriguing watch.
