After two decades at the helm of one of India's biggest entertainment companies, Shibasish Sarkar has announced his exit from Reliance Entertainment. Sharing the news on social media, Sarkar wrote, “After spending two decades in @RelianceEnt time to move on. Need blessings & wishes! @katha_studios,” signalling the beginning of an exciting new chapter with his own production venture, Katha Studios. The announcement has already drawn warm wishes from several members of the entertainment industry.
Sarkar leaves behind an impressive legacy at Reliance Entertainment, where he served as Group CEO, overseeing a vast portfolio spanning films, television, digital content and gaming. During his tenure, the company was associated with several of Bollywood's biggest theatrical releases and popular streaming projects. His leadership also extended beyond individual films, with his involvement in major business initiatives, acquisitions and the changing landscape of India's media and entertainment industry.
Now, the industry veteran is turning his attention to Katha Studios, a venture that promises to put storytelling at the centre of his next phase. The announcement was accompanied by a screenshot of the Katha Studios logo, making it clear that Sarkar is ready to devote more time to his entrepreneurial journey. With decades of experience across production, distribution and entertainment business, his move is being closely watched by the industry.
Sarkar's career has also been linked to a wide range of films as a producer or executive producer, including Bholaa, Sherdil: The Pilibhit Saga, The Girl on the Train, Commando 3, Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, Namaste England and Viceroy's House. His recent credits include Main Vaapas Aaunga, the Imtiaz Ali-directed romantic drama starring Diljit Dosanjh, Vedang Raina and Sharvari. His filmography reflects the varied genres and stories that have shaped his long journey in Indian cinema.
As Group CEO of Reliance Entertainment, Sarkar was also at the centre of the company's association with major blockbusters such as Golmaal Again, Simmba, Super 30, Sooryavanshi, 83, Singham Again and Vikram Vedha. On the streaming side, projects including Sacred Games, Indian Police Force, Jubilee, Sultan of Delhi and Sunflower were part of the company's expansive digital portfolio during his tenure. With experience across more than 500 films and projects, Sarkar's industry journey has been anything but ordinary.
The response from industry colleagues to his announcement has been filled with congratulations and good wishes, reflecting the strong professional relationships he has built over the years. As Shibasish Sarkar moves from corporate leadership to entrepreneurship with Katha Studios, expectations are naturally high about what comes next.
