Searchlight Pictures has unveiled the second trailer for Wild Horse Nine, the upcoming darkly comic thriller from acclaimed filmmaker Martin McDonagh. Set against the striking backdrop of Easter Island shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup, the film brings together an intriguing ensemble led by John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell. With political intrigue, complicated loyalties and McDonagh’s signature blend of sharp humour and darker themes, the new trailer offers a closer look at the unusual story.
The film follows CIA agents Chris, played by John Malkovich, and Lee, played by Sam Rockwell, who are dispatched from Santiago to Easter Island by their bureau chief, MJ, portrayed by Steve Buscemi. The longtime partners arrive on the remote island for what initially appears to be a mission that should be manageable. However, as they become surrounded by mysterious circumstances and conflicting agendas, their professional relationship begins to face a serious test.
Easter Island and its iconic Moai statues provide an atmospheric setting for the story. Away from Santiago, Chris and Lee find themselves confronting their own complicated histories while trying to make sense of the conspiracies surrounding them. Chris, in particular, forms an unexpected connection with two rebellious students, played by Mariana di Girolamo and Ailín Salas. That relationship threatens to complicate the mission and sends the carefully controlled operation in an increasingly unpredictable direction.
The cast gives Wild Horse Nine another major attraction. Alongside Malkovich, Rockwell and Buscemi, the ensemble includes Mariana di Girolamo, Ailín Salas, Tom Waits and Parker Posey. The combination of veteran performers and rising international talent fits naturally with the film’s unusual premise, which appears to balance espionage, political tension, personal conflict and offbeat humour.
Wild Horse Nine is both written and directed by Martin McDonagh, the filmmaker behind acclaimed films including In Bruges, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Banshees of Inisherin. His latest project once again appears to place complicated characters in an increasingly chaotic situation, with sharp dialogue and uncomfortable humour woven into a much larger story.
With its striking Easter Island setting, star-studded cast and intriguing historical backdrop, Wild Horse Nine is shaping up as one of Searchlight Pictures’ distinctive upcoming releases. The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on November 6, 2026, giving audiences a chance to see Malkovich and Rockwell as two CIA operatives whose mission becomes far more complicated than expected. The new trailer suggests that paradise may be the last place these two agents can expect to find peace.
