Poonam Pandey celebrated Raksha Bandhan with a heartfelt gesture this year, choosing to honour the Mumbai Police personnel who remain on duty while the city celebrates the festival with their families. The actress and model visited the Oshiwara Police Station in Mumbai and tied rakhis on the wrists of on-duty police personnel, expressing her gratitude for their constant commitment to public safety.
Speaking to the media during her visit, Poonam extended her wishes to everyone celebrating the festival and spoke about the emotional significance of the brother-sister bond. For her, Raksha Bandhan is not simply about rituals and sweets but about recognising the people who protect and stand by others.
“First of all, very best wishes to everyone for Raksha Bandhan. Go home, enjoy some sweets, and shower your sisters with love. The bond between a brother and sister is beautiful—truly the most beautiful relationship there is. In today's society, people might say all sorts of things, but when it comes to the bond with a sister, everything else pauses. It is such a beautiful day,” Poonam said.
She then revealed what inspired her to spend the festival at a police station rather than celebrating it privately. Poonam said that while thinking about Raksha Bandhan the previous night, she found herself thinking about the Mumbai Police and the immense responsibility they carry every day.
“Last night, I simply thought about the Mumbai Police—they work so hard for us and for our security. If they weren't there, you know what the crime rate would be like. I just wanted to show them some respect and affection in my own way. That is the reason I am here,” she explained.
For Poonam, the connection between Raksha Bandhan and the police was a natural one. When asked why she chose to tie rakhis to police personnel, she explained that their role in protecting citizens makes them like brothers to everyone. “Because, technically speaking, they are our brothers too—brothers to all of us. They look after us. If something were to happen to you or anyone else, they are the ones you would call, right? So, they are family; they are our brothers.”
Her words capture the sentiment behind her visit. While Raksha Bandhan traditionally celebrates the bond between siblings, Poonam chose to broaden the meaning of the festival by recognising those who protect the public and are often working while families come together to celebrate. The actress was also asked what gift she would like to receive from her brothers this Raksha Bandhan. Her answer was surprisingly simple. Rather than asking for something material, she said that the protection provided by the police is already a gift in itself. “I think the fact that they look after us is already such a huge gift. That in itself is a massive gift. I’ve simply come here to thank them for taking such good care of us and everyone else,” Poonam said.
The gesture turned the festive celebration into an expression of appreciation for Mumbai’s police force. By personally visiting the Oshiwara Police Station and tying rakhis, Poonam acknowledged the officers who continue to work through festivals, ensuring that citizens can celebrate safely.
Poonam also had a message for people celebrating Raksha Bandhan, urging them to focus on love, family and positivity instead of negativity. “It would be: go and show love to your sisters. Celebrate this day wonderfully with your families. And please, guys, stop being so negative—let's find some peace in life on days like this. Thank you.”
Her appeal for peace added another dimension to the celebration. At a time when social media can often become dominated by arguments and negativity, Poonam urged people to use a festival like Raksha Bandhan as an opportunity to reconnect with family and spread affection.
The visit also offered a reminder of the people who work behind the scenes to keep Mumbai safe.
