Nupur Sanon has spoken out against the policing of women’s clothing, saying it is time to move beyond telling women what they should or should not wear. The actor came out in support of her sister, Kriti Sanon, who faced backlash over a jewellery advertisement that sparked an online controversy. While acknowledging that she would privately disagree with her sister if she felt she was wrong, Nupur stressed that criticism should never become an excuse for personal attacks or nasty behaviour. She shared her views while interacting with the media at the curtain-raiser event for Stayfree GoFlo’s initiative, which was attended by Neha Dhupia, Angad Bedi, Anita Lobo, Soha Ali Khan, Kubbra Sait and others.

When asked about Kriti facing criticism over the advertisement, Nupur made it clear that her support comes from her belief in what is right, rather than simply from their relationship as sisters. She said, “See, I always support her. And it’s not just about supporting her; I support what is right, and most of the time, she is in the right. If she isn't, I’ll tell her privately. But I feel that—again, we are in 2026—so please, stop telling girls what they should or shouldn't wear. There’s a difference between saying, 'Hey, this doesn't look good,' and stooping to the level of truly nasty behavior. So, absolutely.”

The controversy surrounding Kriti centred on a Raksha Bandhan promotional campaign for silver jewellery brand GIVA, released in August 2026. The advertisement triggered heated online debate, with criticism extending into discussions around women’s clothing and social expectations. The backlash eventually led the brand to take the advertisement down. Nupur’s remarks bring the conversation back to a larger question about personal choice and the way women are judged for their appearance. While she acknowledged that people can have differing opinions, she drew a clear distinction between expressing a preference and resorting to abusive or demeaning behaviour.

For Nupur, the issue goes beyond defending a family member. Her comments underline the importance of allowing women the freedom to make their own choices without facing disproportionate scrutiny. She also pointed out that disagreement does not have to turn into public humiliation, adding that she would address any concerns with Kriti privately. Her stance comes at a time when conversations around online trolling, moral policing and the expectations placed on women continue to generate debate.

At the same event, Nupur also spoke about Neha Dhupia’s efforts to promote women’s empowerment through initiatives such as GoFlo. Praising Neha’s commitment, she highlighted the need to normalise conversations around menstruation and menstrual health. “I think Neha frequently takes initiatives related to women's empowerment. She is a very strong woman, and I believe it is high time we normalized periods; we don't want to be treated as if it’s some huge, extraordinary event—it happens every month,” Nupur said, emphasising that menstruation should be discussed as a natural part of life rather than something to be hidden.

Nupur further reflected on the comfort she has experienced when discussing periods with her own family, noting that not everyone has the same freedom to speak openly at home. “I think I’ve had the luxury—and I would call it a luxury, because not many people share that level of comfort with their parents, especially their dads, to talk openly about periods. And I feel that is something basic we should have mastered by 2026,” she added. Her comments highlighted how open communication within families can help break stigma and make menstrual awareness a more everyday conversation.

From speaking up against the policing of women’s clothing to advocating for open discussions about periods, Nupur’s remarks at the Stayfree GoFlo curtain-raiser touched on issues that affect women across different stages of life. Her message was clear: personal choices should not invite cruelty, and conversations around women’s bodies—whether about what they wear or their menstrual health—need greater understanding, respect and openness.
