The makers of Netflix's upcoming action thriller Gandhari recently hosted a special trailer preview event in Mumbai, bringing together Taapsee Pannu, Ishwak Singh, Chhaya Kadam, Kanika Dhillon and several members of the team. With the film gearing up for its Netflix premiere on September 3, the event offered a closer look at the intense world of the upcoming thriller and the characters driving its story.
During a media interaction at the event, Ishwak Singh opened up about working with Netflix and described the experience as particularly special. Talking about the collaboration, the actor said, "It was a very special experience. I have to say, some of my favorite content is on Netflix—it is the OG platform. So, there’s no denying that being on Netflix feels incredibly special, especially with a collaboration like this."
Ishwak also spoke warmly about the people involved in bringing Gandhari to life. "You know, with all the stakeholders involved—Taapsee, Kanika, Dev, and Mebin—I was really looking forward to working with them. Everything came together to create a story featuring a character who is so close to my heart; I couldn't have asked for a better start," he added.
The actor's excitement becomes easier to understand when he talks about his character. Ishwak plays a family man whose emotional journey forms an important part of the story. Unlike a conventional action hero who is driven by revenge or ambition, his character is deeply rooted in his role as a father and husband, making the emotional stakes of the thriller even more personal.
Describing the character, Ishwak said, "It’s a father’s journey—you could call him a family man, someone dedicated to his family, a loving father and husband; the emotional aspect of the role is truly special." He further explained that audiences would understand the depth of the character once they watch the film, adding that at his core, the character is someone who cares deeply about his family and daughter.
"He is someone who deeply cares about his family and his daughter, and is willing to go to any lengths to protect them," Ishwak said. That description offers an important clue about the emotional heart of Gandhari, which appears to be balancing its action with a deeply personal story about family, loss and the lengths parents can go to protect their children.
Directed by Devashish Makhija and written and produced by Kanika Dhillon, Gandhari is set against the atmospheric backdrop of a fictional town called Joypurra. The film brings together Taapsee Pannu, Ishwak Singh, Chhaya Kadam and Swastika Mukherjee in a story that blends action, mystery, folklore and revenge.
At the centre of the story is a mother who loses her young daughter at a busy railway station. The tragedy becomes even more devastating when a violent attack temporarily leaves her unable to see. As fear and grief take over, she is forced to confront a hidden network of child traffickers operating within the mysterious world of Joypurra.
The town itself appears to be almost a character in the film. Filled with behrupiyas, old legends and secrets, Joypurra provides an atmospheric backdrop for a mother who transforms her grief into a powerful force of revenge. Her mission is not only to find her missing daughter but also to rescue other children who have disappeared into the trafficking network.
With Taapsee Pannu leading the film and Ishwak Singh bringing an emotional family perspective to the story, Gandhari appears to be aiming for more than straightforward action. The combination of an intense mother-daughter storyline, a mysterious setting and morally complicated characters gives the film a darker edge.
