Lionsgate has unveiled the first official trailer for Above the Below, an upcoming science fiction survival thriller that promises to take audiences on a nerve-racking journey into the depths of the ocean. Starring Idris Elba, Caitlin FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin, the film follows three astronauts whose return to Earth turns into a desperate struggle for survival after their spacecraft is forced off course during re-entry. With their capsule crashing into the water and communication with the outside world lost, the astronauts find themselves trapped in a terrifying situation where every passing moment could be their last. The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 4, 2026.
The newly released trailer offers a tense glimpse into the astronauts' nightmare, using confined spaces, mysterious visuals and the overwhelming presence of water to build suspense. What should have been a routine journey home quickly becomes a fight against the elements when their futuristic spacecraft suffers a catastrophic setback. As the damaged capsule sinks deeper into the ocean, the crew must confront the immediate danger of their surroundings while searching for a way to survive. The isolation makes the situation even more frightening, with no clear rescue plan and no reliable connection to the outside world.
Idris Elba plays Jackson, alongside Caitlin FitzGerald as Brooks and Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Rhodes. The three characters form the emotional centre of the story as they attempt to navigate an increasingly desperate situation. Each decision could determine whether they make it out alive, while the limited space inside the capsule adds another layer of pressure. The spacecraft also appears to involve an artificial intelligence entity, introducing an additional mystery into the narrative. Whether the technology becomes a lifeline or another source of uncertainty remains one of the intriguing questions raised by the trailer.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Above the Below is the possibility that the astronauts' predicament may involve more than a simple spacecraft malfunction. The trailer's unusual glimpses through the capsule's viewport leave room for speculation about what lies beyond the water surrounding them. Could Earth have changed dramatically during their absence? Might the astronauts be confronting a future they never expected to return to? The idea of a planet transformed by rising sea levels and climate change offers an intriguing possibility, although the trailer does not establish that the film takes place in a completely flooded future. For now, the mystery surrounding their surroundings remains one of the story's biggest attractions.
The film is co-directed by Idris Elba and Martin Owen, bringing together Elba's experience as a performer and filmmaker with Owen's directorial vision. The screenplay is written by Elizabeth Morris, Matt Mitchell and Vicki Sargent, based on a story by Owen. Their collaboration places the focus on a high-stakes survival scenario while allowing the science fiction elements to create a wider sense of uncertainty. Rather than relying only on large-scale action, the premise draws tension from the astronauts' isolation, the dangers of their damaged vessel and the possibility that the world outside may hold unexpected answers.
With its claustrophobic setting, mysterious technology and life-or-death stakes, Above the Below is shaping up to be an intriguing addition to the science fiction thriller lineup of 2026. Idris Elba leads a story that combines the dangers of space travel with the terrifying vulnerability of being trapped underwater. The trailer raises several questions without giving away the larger mystery, leaving audiences to wonder what the astronauts will discover as their capsule sinks further into the ocean. As the December 4 release date approaches, viewers can look forward to finding out whether the crew's greatest challenge is simply surviving the crash or uncovering the truth about the world waiting beyond their viewport.
