Mumbai witnessed a memorable gathering of cinema, literature and cricket legends on Friday, October 2, as Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Gulzar and Sachin Tendulkar came together for the launch of DR BLUE: A Cancer Surgeon’s Journey into the Human Side of Healing. The memoir, written by renowned cancer surgeon Dr. P. Jagannath and co-authored by Pankaj Mishra, brought together three icons who share a personal connection with the veteran doctor and his work. Amitabh Bachchan and Gulzar shared a warm greeting at the event and were later seen seated together during the session, creating a picture-perfect moment that quickly caught attention.

The presence of Amitabh Bachchan and Gulzar was particularly special given their decades-long association. The two legendary figures have worked together on several creative projects since the 1970s, with Gulzar contributing as a filmmaker, writer and lyricist to films featuring Bachchan. Their bond has also extended beyond cinema through their shared appreciation for literature and poetry. At the DR BLUE launch, their reunion offered another glimpse of that enduring connection, while Sachin Tendulkar’s presence added a sporting legend to the gathering.

The event also carried a deeply personal significance for the guests. According to reports, Dr. Jagannath operated on Amitabh Bachchan for diverticulitis in 2015, while Gulzar was also his former patient. Sachin Tendulkar attended the launch with another personal connection to the surgeon, as Dr. Jagannath had operated on his mother. This made the occasion more than a conventional book launch, with the three celebrated personalities coming together to honour a doctor whose professional journey had touched their families in different ways.

Amitabh Bachchan also contributed a foreword to DR BLUE, making his appearance at the launch even more meaningful. Dr. Jagannath’s memoir looks back at four decades in medicine, including his years at Tata Memorial Hospital, and focuses on the human experiences surrounding cancer treatment. The book explores the relationship between doctors, patients and families rather than presenting medicine only through the lens of procedures and technology. Dr. Jagannath has described the work as being shaped by the people he encountered throughout his career and the lessons they taught him.

At the launch, Dr. Jagannath spoke about bringing the human element back to healthcare and making medicine more patient-centric. He stressed the importance of human touch in medical practice and cautioned against treating preventive healthcare as a race to undergo as many tests as possible. He also spoke about his belief that medicine should be guided by science while remaining sensitive to the fears and concerns of patients and their families. His message gave the Mumbai gathering a purpose beyond celebrating a memoir, turning the launch into a conversation about the kind of healthcare patients deserve.

There was also a philanthropic purpose attached to DR BLUE. The book is published by Juggernaut Books, and according to Dr. Jagannath’s own announcement, all royalties from the book are being dedicated to the Crusade Against Cancer Foundation, which supports cancer patients and their families. With Amitabh Bachchan, Gulzar and Sachin Tendulkar lending their presence to the occasion, the Mumbai launch brought together three different worlds while keeping the focus firmly on Dr. Jagannath’s journey, the human side of healing and the continuing fight against cancer.
