Movie Review

Rating :

Verdict : All the Anuraag Kashyap die hard fans along with the ones who love dark and good cinema will definitely love the movie.... ____________________________________________________________________________

Anurag Kashyap’s Ugly finally hit the theatres today and with the no-smoking disclaimer. The movie stars Surveen Chawla, Rahul Bhatt, Tejaswini Kolhapure, Ronit Roy and Vineet Kumar. So let's find out whether 'Ugly' will give us an out and out dark thriller as promised by its maker or end up being another pseudo attempt by this creative director satisfying certain sect of cinema lovers only.

Story:-

'Ugly' is story of struggling actor Rahul Kapoor (Rahul Bhat), whose daughter Kali (Anshikaa Shrivastava) gets kidnapped in the busy streets of Mumbai. Without letting his ex-wife Shalini (Tejaswini Kholhapure) know about the kidnapping, Rahul and his friend Chaitanya (Vineet Singh) seeks the help of the police. Shalini's current husband Shoumik Bose (Ronit Roy) is the officer in charge, who feels Rahul and his friend are the ones who have kidnapped Kali. The blame game keeps continuing and what happens next is what the entire film is all about.

Positive Points:-

The movie may be named Ugly, but it has been made beautifully. The film has all the emotions; lie, betrayal, murder, anguish, sadness and happiness; blended in one, which may regret the viewers to blink their eyes in between scenes. Speaking of performances, what is not to like. Vineet Kumar and Surveen Chawla, who are only seen in a few scenes, manage to make their mark strongly. Ronit Roy, plays the tough guy role, matching that of Udaan, but he sure knows to leave an impact with it quite well. Rahul Bhatt is excellent with his portrayal of a desperate, failed actor.

I wouldnt fail to mention the scene between Girish and Rahul, where Rahul goes to the police station to lodge a complaint and Girish starts make fun of his condition, in a way that it turns out to be hilarious for the viewers. Being a dark film, the climax is ought to be disturbing, but if that wouldn’t have been the case then the movie sure would have been less interesting.

Negative Points:-

The only bad about the movie is that it has been portrayed as a dark thriller, which not many people may be open to seeing. It is not the regular popcorn entertainment kind of a film which the family audience will love.

Technical Points:-

Technically, the movie is superb. Anurag Kashyap, who has been one heck of a director, sure has marvel led the world with his movies, but Ugly is just something else. Anurag directs this in a way that it not only touches everyone’s heart but also gives us a reality check by the end.

Cinematographer Nikos Andretsakis, who earlier worked on Dibakar Bannerjee’s films gives the movie the required amount of suspense and creativity that is needed. Another mentionable thing is the awe-inspiring background score by Brian McOmber, which is just quite different to all the movies made in bollywood before. Dialogues are amazing and so is the abrupt editing, which just blends in.

Ugly is an upcoming Hindi emotional drama thriller film written and directed by Anurag Kashyap. The film was screened in the Directors' Fortnight section at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. It also opened the 2014 New York Indian Film Festival. The film stars Girish Kulkarni, Ronit Roy, Tejaswini Kolhapure, Vineet Kumar Singh, Surveen Chawla and Vipin Sharma in pivotal roles. The film will also feature model turned TV actor Rahul Bhat in an important role. The film is produced by DAR Motion Pictures and Phantom Films. The digital poster of the film was released on May 8,2013 and it will release on 26th December, 2014.
