Verdict : Go watch it ! and relive your college days, guaranteed you leave the cinema with a big smile on your face

The promo of Student of The Year was not impressive, but it was the music that got us excited about the film. Fortunately, Student of The Year did not disappoint us and turned out to be an amazing surprise. The movie had us laughing from start to finish. Heres why.The film is set in a fancy boarding school called Saint Teresas headed by Yogendra Vashisht (Rishi Kapoor). Alia Bhatt plays poor-little-rich-girl Shanaya. She is dating Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan) who is a flirtatious rockstar, a spoilt brat who cannot keeps his hands off other girls, especially Tanya (Sana Saeed). Abhimanyu Singh (Siddharth Malhotra) is the newbie who grabs all the eyeballs. So Rohan and Abhimanyu become best friends and thats how a love triangle is also formed. They start competing with each other because of the Student of the Year trophy. The film is not about the love triangle between the leads; it is about the friendship between the male leads.

Karan Johar, Anvita Dutt, Rensil Dsilva and Niranjan Iyengar have contributed to the script and screenplay of the film . The dialogue is so witty, snappy and fresh that it keeps you in splits throughout. It is unlike the usual lines we hear in Karan Johars films with SRK and Kajol. Of course, being a grand KJo production, the canvas is huge, picture-perfect and at times at make-believe. But it gets a tad dramatic towards the end yet these are forgivable flaws. The three leads have been given amazing entry sequences. You actually begin rooting for the characters in the races towards the end which is an amazing achievement for a film with newcomers. Memorable sequences are the football match in the first half, treasure hunt and the races. There are also lovable tributes to old Hindi films and songs. The production design and locales and camera work is stunning. The music is a major strength of the movie as is the background score. Instant favourites are Ishq wala love, Vele, and Disco Deewane. The nuances of college campus life are captured perfectly with the depiction of all the rivalry, friendship, hidden agendas, crushes, chemistry, peer and parental pressure, break-ups, reunions, jealousy and teen angst that students experience.
Alia Bhatt looks like a lively gorgeous doll and has a lovable screen presence. She is a decent actress who will only get better in upcoming movies. Varun Dhawan is the newcomer who shines the brightest. He is a superb dancer and has an energetic screen presence. He oozes boyish charm and is effortless as the rebellious bratty son of a millionaire. Siddharth Malhotra veers towards the handsome, mature, brooding and vulnerable side and does justice to his part. Kayoze Irani is remarkable as the narrator of the movie. Sana Saeed is quite annoying and her role will wipe out all your memories of Anjali from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Ronit Roy is perfectly cast as the sports coach. Rishi Kapoor keeps reinventing himself with each movie even at this age. He sportingly and gracefully plays the lovable and effeminate Dean without ever going over-the-top. The supporting cast does an able job because the characters are well-etched.
Karan Johar has stepped out of his comfort zone to make a young and vibrant film without his favourite actors (Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol). The dream merchant has succeeded and how! SOTY is everything the quintessential KJo film should be and more. It makes you laugh and cry (a little). Go watch it with your family and friends and relive your college days. You are guaranteed to leave the cinema with a big smile on your face.

Student of the Year is an upcoming Indian comedy film directed by Karan Johar, starring new comers Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles. The film is produced by Karan Johar and Shahrukh Khan under the banner of Red Chillies Entertainment and Dharma Productions. The film is to be released on 19 October 2012
