Verdict : Mere Dost Picture Bakwaas Hai!
What matters in a film; actions, emotions, drama, intimated scenes, item numbers or foreign locations? Well these things does matter but if a story plot is strong, half of the work is done. A concept is just one of the pillars it stands out strong when it executed the way it is visualized. Unfortunately, this film itself falls prey of these peripheral portions.
It’s a story about a budding filmmaker Amar Joshi played by Sunil Shetty. Amar tells the lead heroine of his film to underplay while on camera. Amar has learnt film making from London and aspires to make a film in Bollywood. A concept runs through his mind. He writes script about a rape victim protagonist and creates a picture in his mind about being a realistic filmmaker. The inflexible attitude of the impractical filmmaker keeps him jobless in Bollywood for months. Until he stumbles upon a random PR Agent (Rakesh Bedi), who agrees to produce his film. But Amars struggle doesnt end there as his storyline is altered day in and day out over commercial considerations, till the point that his film ends up turning a different product altogether. The idealistic Amar Joshi is manipulated by the big bad world of Bollywood and thrives in mediocrity. Does everything ends up well is yet to be found out.
We have seen pictures that show an actor or actress point of view or their life journey through difficuties. One of the best examples could be Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Fashion’. Mere Dost Picture Abhi Baki Hai portrays a director’s life journey through hardships and his point of view.
Well talking about the direction, writer director ‘Rajnish Raj Thakur’ could not be flair in his story plot. He chooses a promising theme but unfortunately doesnt have the aptitude to craft it into a fine film. At places he tried introducing Rajpal Yadav’s comic punches which was kool but not that effective. The star cast goes over the top in acting.
Suniel Shetty gets to play the solo lead after a long time. He is the only one who underplays in the film while everyone else hams. Rajpal Yadav is boisterous but his broken English lines occasionally induce laughter. Rakesh Bedi despite a fake moustache is endurable. Om Puri and Neena Gupta are simply average. Udita Goswami, Shyan Munshi and Shawar Ali cant act for nuts.
The title track is the only funky song worth giving a hear. Shabab Sabri is the lead singer to sing the song but somewhere we find he was way better in his previous tracks.
My verdict
One time watch.
Picture Abhi Baki hai is the journey of Amar Joshi (sunil Shetty) who runs a video library in banaras and aspires to be a film maker. Despite facing objection from his father amar joshi decides to sell his video library and join a film Institute in London.
After completing his course he lands in the city of dreams “Mumbai” to make his film. Suraj (rajpal yadav) is a struggling actor doing bit roles in T.V. serials, who Is Amar’s only connection in Bollywood.
Amar joshi starts his struggle to make his film by meeting different type of producers who have their own take on amar’s story. After many failed attempts He finally bumps into monty chadda (Rakesh Bedi) a P.R. Publicity man who sees good potential in amar and decides to produce his film.
Amar & monty take help of star secretary gupta ji (Akhil Mishra) to convince mohini (udita Goswami) & her starry mother mummy ji (neena gupta) who agrees to do the film.
Amar’s film starts, But is stalled all of a sudden when monty suddenly disappears. Amar is summoned by sudama bhosle (Deepak shirke) a don who was financing his film. He wants amar to complete his film and also wants him to cast his girlfriend “Tina” (mummait khan) Amar reluctantly agrees as he has no option. But as luck would have it sudama bhosle is shot dead and Amar’s film is stalled once again. Monty Chaddha resurfaces again and decides to make Amar’s Film into a magnum opus. so a veteran silver jubilee writer Mr. Baig (Om Puri) is brought on board. Once in, Mr. Baig takes over the reins of the film from amar and changes a it into a totally different film all together .
What follows is a chain of events which gives the audience a never seen before insight into the modus operadi of how films are generally made in bollywood. In a nutshell picture abhi baki hai will take you on a wild journey inside the dreamy world of bollywood where you will see the reality of the largest film industry of the world. It won’t just make you laugh, it will make you appreciate the efforts of those who try to entertain you every Friday.
